Fact #1: I am a sucker for retellings of the King Arthur myth.

Fact #2: Starz is producing a new retelling of the King Arthur myth entitled (very creatively, I might add): Camelot.

Fact #3: Camelot features someone who is probably the worst actor playing Arthur I have ever seen. They seem to be going for 'naive and young and out of his depth,' but it would be one thing if he actually had any screen presence or at least, potential for gravitas, or had any sort of rakish charm OR you know, hair that didn't suck. It kills the entire show, pretty much. Apparently casting a decent actor for Arthur is kind of important for retellings of the King Arthur myth. Who knew?

Fact #4: Eva Green does rock it as Morgan Le Fay, though I'm not sure why they made her Uther's daughter instead of Igraine's. Agent Shakespeare does a serviceable, though bald Merlin. James Purefoy steals some scenes as King Lot. Kay is actually pretty awesome.

Fact #5: I now feel the urge to finish watching Season 2 and Season 3 of Merlin just so that I can see a decent Arthur on screen. Man, I am going to be braving the inevitable evilification of Morgana for this. Though from what I see, the Arthur/Gwen is handled well, which makes me happy. Yay, Gwen.

Fact #6: The writing is serviceable. The scenery is probably very pretty but loses something on the computer monitor.

Fact #7: The gratuitous sex is hilariously gratuitous. It adds absolutely nothing to the plot or character development.

Fact #8: I probably won't watch more, unless I hear that it gets a lot better.

Unrelated but more awesome thing: [livejournal.com profile] reena_jenkins and [livejournal.com profile] bessyboo have made a podbook (and associated podfic) of Penis Envy, And Other Things Meredith McKay Doesn't Actually Have. It has a pretty cover! Check it out.

I owe people lots of stuff all over the place. I'll try to get to them tomorrow!

So, [livejournal.com profile] queenzulu pimped me into Leverage, TNT's latest television show about thieves, and it is AWESOME.

They heist! They snark! They are ridiculous! They have two female characters I like (though one of them is being roped into a crappy romantic subplot)! The black guy is the nerdy hacker and not the muscle! Who talks about torrenting Doctor Who!

Of course, there is a good amount of cheese to all of this, though if you can just sit back and enjoy it, it's sort of delightful. There's some unnecessary angst about the main character's son (and seriously, if it isn't daddy issues, it's son issues, but that's a rant for another time).

Overall, though, it's about people being ridiculously competent as they scam and steal from other people (bad guys, of course), and if you dug the Ocean's movies, you'll dig this as well because frequently the scams are needlessly complicated and feature ridiculous accents.

I'm not feeling fannish about it, but it is ridiculously fun.

On a similar note, Sheppard's 11 is moving forwards at a nice pace. I have reached 12,500 words and have only the actual heist left to write (that's not a spoiler, right? You guys do know that there's a heist involved?). Everything is pretty bare bones at the moment, so editing is going to involve a whole lot of fleshing out, but I am excited. Next up will be sketching out what scenes I want for the heist, then making a pass through to fill those scenes in.

Okay, so here's my request for recs: What's your favorite retelling of the King Arthur legend? I'm on a kick, and I know there has to be dozens and dozens out there, but I don't know which ones I should look into! For the record, I've read The Once and Future King, Mists of Avalon, Guinevere: Queen of the Summer Country, and I'm probably going to be looking into Mary Stewart's Merlin trilogy. So, if you guys know of anything particularly awesome I haven't mentioned, please tell me about it.

Also, I have been on an Arthurian legend kick, as one does. At the moment, I'm reading through Mists of Avalon, which is rather quite good. Yay for feminist reworkings. However, I do spend a lot of time wanting to punch Guinevere in the face, which is unfortunate. Like, I don't usually hate her, even as she's cheating on my woobie favorite character, Arthur, but in this one she just aggravates me ALL THE TIME. Please tell me I'm not the only one who reacted that way.

Anyway, I wrote three (3) stories for Yuletide this year. I doubt any of you have read any of them (unless you've betaed them or I've told you), but if you want to give it a shot and you get it right, I can write you fic, I guess.

Also, I'm kind of in the mood to make icons, so I might open myself up to icon requests in the near future. We'll see.
