Fact #1: I am a sucker for retellings of the King Arthur myth.

Fact #2: Starz is producing a new retelling of the King Arthur myth entitled (very creatively, I might add): Camelot.

Fact #3: Camelot features someone who is probably the worst actor playing Arthur I have ever seen. They seem to be going for 'naive and young and out of his depth,' but it would be one thing if he actually had any screen presence or at least, potential for gravitas, or had any sort of rakish charm OR you know, hair that didn't suck. It kills the entire show, pretty much. Apparently casting a decent actor for Arthur is kind of important for retellings of the King Arthur myth. Who knew?

Fact #4: Eva Green does rock it as Morgan Le Fay, though I'm not sure why they made her Uther's daughter instead of Igraine's. Agent Shakespeare does a serviceable, though bald Merlin. James Purefoy steals some scenes as King Lot. Kay is actually pretty awesome.

Fact #5: I now feel the urge to finish watching Season 2 and Season 3 of Merlin just so that I can see a decent Arthur on screen. Man, I am going to be braving the inevitable evilification of Morgana for this. Though from what I see, the Arthur/Gwen is handled well, which makes me happy. Yay, Gwen.

Fact #6: The writing is serviceable. The scenery is probably very pretty but loses something on the computer monitor.

Fact #7: The gratuitous sex is hilariously gratuitous. It adds absolutely nothing to the plot or character development.

Fact #8: I probably won't watch more, unless I hear that it gets a lot better.

Unrelated but more awesome thing: [livejournal.com profile] reena_jenkins and [livejournal.com profile] bessyboo have made a podbook (and associated podfic) of Penis Envy, And Other Things Meredith McKay Doesn't Actually Have. It has a pretty cover! Check it out.

I owe people lots of stuff all over the place. I'll try to get to them tomorrow!

Okay, so I finally got around to obtaining Merlin Season 2. I'm only about two eps in, and the simple fact of the matter is that I cannot watch too much of it at once or else I will end up lolzing over the entire thing like a crazy person.

So I KIND OF still love the OT4, even though they haven't had time to be OT4-y, and I have to say that I am kind of in love with the Arthur/Gwen, even though he's a total jerk and Morgana would be so much better to her. And the slash dragon still totally ships Merlin/Arthur.

Also, sometimes this show almost fools me into thinking that it might be epic and tragic and glorious, but then it totally ruins the effect a few seconds later by covering Merlin in leeches or highlighting Arthur's jerkassyness.

Anyway, anyone got any good Merlin futurefic recs? The more epic and tragic and OT4-y the better, of course.

I adore Arthurian legend the way I love comic book canon, in the way they're both so easy to retell and to retell in different ways. New details can be added or old details can be discarded. It's all okay!

Also, Yuletide stories are up. All 2426 of them. I received two very wonderful presents:

Aprocypha (Carnivale, Sofie) - I love Sofie like a crazy thing, and this story captures her less-than-pleasant relationship with her mother and her strange, tense relationship with Ben in the first season. It's wonderfully moody and the Sofie voice is dead on.

Dangerous Neighborhoods (District B13, Damien/Leito) - Oh, man. This was, just, exactly what I wanted. Character and politics and the stupid little details of everyday life. This Damien is exactly how I see him, idealistic and pragmatic at the same time. And his relationship with Leito is so right, tense but comfortable. Also, Lola shows up and is awesome.

And on top of that, there are 2424 other stories to read and enjoy! I may eventually post a recs list, but I'm not sure. We'll see.

Merlin is cracktastic and ridiculously fun. I really adore retellings of my favorite stories, and it does that in quite interesting ways! I loved what they did with Excalibur, and I desperately hope that they make Arthur pull that damn thing out of a stone by the end of this. I may even have to write that fic myself.

Also! I turned in my yuletide story a few days ago, so I did not run into any difficulties there. I'm glad to see everyone else on my flist made it as well! Go us!

I am also going to attempt to write a Yuletide Treat. I think. Maybe. Or even just a pinch hit. WE'LL SEE. Who else is with me in this insanity?
