I have now updated my OS to Feisty, which is quite nice. I feel as though there was a slight speed up on boot, and now Electric Sheep works with gnome-screensaver, which is WAY AWESOME. (If you aren't aware of what it is, it's a gorgeous screensaver that is constantly being created, and yeah. Go check it out.)

At the moment, I feel pretty exhausted and burned out and stuff. Totally need this semester to be over soon. Tomorrow I have homework due, hiring meetings to attend, and grading.

ETR: More boring whining. I really need to stop doing this when I'm being lame.

I miss having a Mary Sue. She made everything better. Like if there was some annoying thing about canon that needed to be fixed, she could go in and fix it, and everyone would like her and the world would just be a better place if she were there. Seriously. I really do miss her a lot these days.

I have been pimping out Neil Gaiman's A Study in Emerald to all my friends, so I feel like it's necessary to pimp it out to all of you. It's a Sherlock Holmes/H.P. Lovecraft crossover and it's brilliant. Just go read it. Bask in its brilliance. It's in PDF form, but don't let that stop you. The fake advertisements are awesome.

AIGLX kind of hates me and everything I do. *sniff* Maybe I'll try to set up XGL, see if that actually works, but I'm feeling too lazy.

Also, I head back to school and TA Camp tomorrow. Must do lots of packing. Holy crap, I'm halfway through the school year. When did that happen?

Have now upgraded to Edgy Eft with a clean install. It's not substantially different from anything else, as far as I can tell, but Firefox 2 breaks my favorite theme. Which makes me very sad. I also had to spend a lot of time switching the tab behavior back to something that doesn't suck.

Dear [livejournal.com profile] house_wilson,

Stop worrying about the fucking poll and write me some porn, dammit.

Love,
me

Dear Youtube,

Why the fuck did you just break your videos under Linux Flash 9 beta? Are you high or something?

No love,
me

BSG this week!

Tonight's Tech House's big party of the the year, Javaspook. There are tons of baked goods being made in the kitchen right now. Should be a lot of fun.

Dear myself,

Seeing as you have far too much work due for tomorrow that you need to do, it would be unwise to reformat your Linux partition and install the new version of Ubuntu.

Love,
me

P.S. You also have lots of grading to do.

okay, so I've borrow the complete works of Arthur C. Clarke from the library, and I'm definitely not going to be able to read them all in time. So, If anyone's a fan, a list of stories I have to read would be nice. Like really nice. Please?

There's also this awesome Linux commercial that IBM did a few years back, and it's just plain cool, a little creepy as well, and not entirely accurate. Plus, it's kind of old. But it's still a really good ad. Go watch.

I'm trying to use Wine to run old school Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? and Oregon Trail II, but it's not working. This makes me sad. Very sad.

It needs to rain. A lot. For reals. I'm really over this heatwave crap.

I am attempting to make more headway into my [livejournal.com profile] 30_gens fic. Right now, I think I have about 14 posted, 5 waiting to be edited and posted and 11 in various states of completion. I am going to finish these bastards. Just you wait and see.

Tux the Linux penguin is the cutest thing evar. I kind of want to make a stuffed one, but I suck at sewing, so no good would ever come of it.

The Xgl switcher hates me, I think. I'm not sure why it's slowed down so drastically, but it's not good for my blood pressure, as Xgl has a tendency to crash my system while using the switcher as well.

Anyone who says that proprietary software is somehow better documented than open source software has never tried to use IBM proprietary software.

I saw Superman Returns again in a nearby drive-in with [livejournal.com profile] dryadinthewood last night, and a few of the things that were bothering me about it bothered me much less. Namely Lex Luthor and Lois Lane. Other things that were bothering me, still bothered me. Namely, the pacing.

But I still love it lots.

(Though not as much as Batman Begins, but that's just me.)

I will probably ramble about them both again some other time.

At the moment, I'm kind of working on this odd Clark gen piece that I don't think anyone will read.

I also managed to get XGL/Compiz working with GNOME. (They're shiny Mac-like window/desktop effects, for the uninformed.) I am digging it muchly. It seems to have a tendency to crash however, so I'm looking for solutions for that. Also, it sometimes likes my right Alt key, sometimes it doesn't.

I love Linux a lot. Like crazy.

It's a lot of work to maintain and occasionally really frustrating, but I think that's the joy in it. It's challenging and rewarding in equal measures, though, and it's perfect for a big computer nerd like me.

The command line kicks so much ass, too. ubuntu is pretty damn awesome.

Have been messing around with Deskbar and Beagle. Pretty nifty. It's trying really hard to be Quicksilver, I think. Still, I like it perfectly fine on its own. I'm still not used to using it, but I'm sure I'll fall in love pretty quickly once I use it on a regular basis.

I also installed Ubuntu on my parent's desktop. It's name is "wampa". I changed the name of my laptop, as well. It used to be "emery-419" after my room at Brown, but I figured since I won't be living there anymore, I should probably change it. It's now "tauntaun", because apparently I am a giant nerd.

Just watched the season finale of Smallville, and it's such a bad show, omg. And yet, for some reason I still watch it. Lois is still awesome. Chloe is still cool. Lex's manpain continues to bore me to tears. The Clark and Lex subtext is still going strong. Lana is beginning to develop a personality. I think. It's kind of hard to tell. Lionel continues to confuse me (in both good and bad ways). James Marsters speaking with his American accent still sounds weird.

So I've been reading a lot of Angel fic lately, and I've realized that he's totally that character type that really draws me in. The kinda assholic, deeply obsessive, deeply caring guy with Issues (see: Roy Mustang, Jack Bristow, Bruce Wayne), though I can't quite put my finger on why I'm really drawn to it. Maybe it's their sheer badassness, maybe it's because they give really good angst.

Still can't write, however. It's at the point where I don't think I'm ready to try a ficathon, simply because I'm paranoid of letting down my recipient. Am trying to put together a fanmix though. It's kind of risky, in terms of various genres it throws together, so I hope I can get it to flow right.

Have received a job offer from IBM for a summer internship, which kicks major ass. I am quite excited.

Upgraded my Ubuntu install to Dapper Drake. I am liking it quite a bit. Lots of nerdy goodness. There were some bumps along the way, but I think they've all been straightened out. I am liking the new version of Times New Roman (I think?). The old one was butt-ugly and annoying to look at.

So, how have you guys been?
