I love the Nolan Batman movies, even with all their flaws. His Bruce/Batman and his manpain I am less enamored with as I get older, but I love his Gotham, which is both heightened and strange, but I also love how grounded and vivid it feels to me. In some Gothams, I don't feel like there are actual people going about their lives in it, but I I always get the sense, when I watch his Batman movies, is that Gotham is a much bigger city than just Batman and the few people he interacts with, and I love that about it.

I tried rewatching Inception and got bored, but The Dark Knight? I could watch that city's drama unfold over and over again. (Even the shitty prisoner's dilemma scene. EVEN THAT.)

Damn, now I need to reread Gotham Central too.

1. Okay, anyone want into Writely? I can invite anyone these days.

2. This article about the gender gap between men and women and the internet is very interesting, because this sort of thing that keeps women from going into CS. Women really don't think they're as good at computers as men. I mean, I suffer from it, too. Like, I still think I suck more at computer science than the other guys in my CS classes.

3. I like the name The Dark Knight for the Batman Begins sequel. It's nicely vague and stuff. The Heath Ledger thing is growing on me the more I think about it. Still not 100%, but still more than when I originally heard it.

4. I am also having a resurgance of my U2 love. It's been waning for a while, but listening to "Beautiful Day" still makes me want to hug the world. I like that feeling.

5. Re: Lebanon and Israel. I don't want to take sides. I just want to scream "WILL YOU PLEASE JUST STOP KILLING EACH OTHER," curl up into a ball, and cry.

Re: Heath Ledger as the Joker

I'm reluctant and kind of torn. I mean, I'm not sure if he could pull it off. We've never really seen him do crazy before, have we? I have no sense of whether or not he'd be any good.

But I do trust Christopher Nolan. A lot. So maybe he'll be the next Katie Holmes (not bad, per se, just not quite up to par) or maybe he'll be better than Jack Nicholson (but not Mark Hamill, 'cause I doubt he can be that good).

We'll see.

I officially declare today, [livejournal.com profile] thedeadparrot Blabs A Lot About Superman Day.

I love the odd bits of Superman/Batman parallelism in terms of, well, everything. Even though people (and by people, I mean comic book writers) only seem to be able to compare their origins, as if that's the only moments of true parallelism.

I love the idea that Superman's personas are both inherently true, as I believe that Clark is as much him as Superman is. I love the idea that neither of Batman's personas are true to him, like, at all. Bruce Wayne is, well, Bruce Wayne, idiotic playboy bazillionaire. Batman is sort of this act that he puts on to scare criminals. Yeah, it's more true than Bruce Wayne is, but I still think it's very much an act, while Superman is both badass superhero and dorky reporter (which is why it's such a big deal for him to need Lois to fall in love with Clark as well as Superman, because they're both him, and he needs her to love all of him, not just a part).

I love the fact that both Metropolis and Gotham are New York City, except that Metropolis is utopia!NYC and Gotham is dystopia!NYC. I have this whole thing about cities, as you may or may not have figured out, and the idea that they come from basically the same exact city, except completely different. I love the idea that their cities have shaped them, in some way, or that they've somehow shaped their cities.

I love that Batman is from this planet, yet alienated enough that he has to create a persona to deal with it. I love that Superman is from another planet, yet loves this one enough to live among the people, creating a persona in order to do good in it.

I love that Batman goes underground, creates a cave for himself to watch the goings on in Gotham. I love that Superman goes above the world, likes to watch it from the outer atmosphere (because, uh, there's no sound in space).

I love that Batman chooses to use fear, and that Superman chooses to use hope. That they chose those things, because they believe it's the right thing to do, and I love that sometimes they're right, and sometimes they're wrong.

I love that Batman is so rooted in one place, despite having been around the world. His town is Gotham, and that's where he works, that's where he does business, that's what he loves. I love that Superman is about the entire world, even though he grew up in a small town. He loves the world, he protects all of it, not just Metropolis.

I love that they're big damn heroes (to borrow a phrase from Joss Whedon), that they both wear silly costumes, that and that they're always there to save the day.

P.S. I'm totally this poster to go along with this one. Because they seriously match. I swear.

Some more Batman Begins thoughts:

- I am still in love with collegeboy!Bruce. Dude, his hair. It gets more strangely attractive every time I see it.
- I watched the scenes where he climbed up the mountain a gazillion time for this fic I wrote, and yet, it never got old.
- The special features are decent. Behind-the-scenes stuff, while interesting and enlightening is fairly common behind-the-scenes stuff. Some of the concept art is really interesting. I really dig this one poster of Bruce looking up in the cave, and a reflection of him in the water is of Batman, looking down. Very The Phantom Menace-ish
- Christopher Nolan, my offer still stands.
- Still don't get the Cillian Murphy obsession. His face kinda scares me, and in a 'wow, you look really weird' way and not in a 'wow, you are so hot you look creepy' way. Sorry. I think it's the lips. and the cheekbones. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about the cheekbones (I have a Christian Bale obsession, don't I?) but Murphy's cheekbones scare me.
- I still need to take lots of Gary screencaps and then proceed to spam [livejournal.com profile] lykaios with them. Seriously.
- I still want to be a ninja. I hear they flip out and kill people all the time.
- Is the sequel out yet? Seriously.

Dear Batman Begins Deluxe Edition DVD,

Why are you not here yet? I yearn to see you again. A lot. Or something.

Get here soon,
me

Hi. I am freaking out about lots of things at the moment, mostly my homework and such. And my Econ midterm which isn't for a few weeks, but I know I suck and I'll probably be below the class average, so hey, no scaling for me. Hopefully I'll be passing, at least.

EDIT: Speaking of Batman Begins: Yet more [livejournal.com profile] 30_gens ficlet things. 19. Time Spent Apart and 2. Unfamiliar Territory, both for your reading pleasure.

Dear Christopher Nolan,

Enclosed is one (1) coupon redeemable for my first born child. You are so awesome omg.

Love,
me

How psyched am I for the Batman Begins sequel that won't be out for a very long time? A lot, to say the least.

Really random crossover thing. In which Bruce isn't quite IC. He's a little too cocky to be fully IC, but you know what? I like cocky!Bruce.

That was surprisingly fun. Maybe I'll do an Alias one next. Rambaldi x Constantine = whee!

Yeah, so I've been lazy for a while. I want to see a new movie, but all of the ones in theaters a) I don't care for or b) suck. The Brothers Grimm looks interesting, if only because of Terry Gilliam, but it sounds vaguely dumb, so yeah, maybe not.

Finally, finally, finally got my room assignment. I'm not on Keeney Quad, which totally screws with my sense of placement, but I think I'll figure things out. My roommate likes Monty Python and the Beatles. This is such a fortuitous event, I'm tempted to give up atheism. Now if I could be certain that my schedule is going to work out.

Read a whole bunch of Batman TPBs because yes, I am lame.

Thoughts:
The Long Halloween/Dark Victory )
Dark Knight Returns )
Batman: Year One )
No Man's Land )

There's a whole bunch more that I could comment on, but I think I'll leave it at that for now.

Ocarina of Time is a great game, but unlike KotoR, playing it for extended periods of time is not an option. Also, because I'm using an emulator, I just simply cannot beat this one part, and it pisses me off. Argh. The arrow keys are just not the same.

I want to read V for Vendetta. The trailer has piqued my interest, and everything about it sounds like it would be my sort of thing. Will check it out later.

Facebook isn't that interesting/good/whatnot as people were hyping. Seriously.

I think I might be able to get around to working some more on I Might Be Wrong. If I can pull myself away from my Batman obsession, of course.
