Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Chocolate (2008)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Characters: Zen (Chocolate), Moom (Chocolate), Masashi (Chocolate)
Additional Tags: Character Study, POV Second Person
Summary:

Learning to understand the world.

I didn't actually sign up for Yuletide, but this set of requests came through the pinch hit list, and I was like 'ooh, I can write that.' and technically it was because District B13, my favorite terrible parkour movie, but this one was a more intriguing challenge, so I decided to write this instead. I love second person POV but it's not something I use very much anymore. This was a great chance to play around with it because of the character and her voice.

Everyone knows that soulmate names can fade -- the most common reasons are death and divorce. They aren't supposed to come back.

I'm not the biggest fan of soulmate AUs, but I do like all the ways in which fandom has messed around with the formula. This was kind of messing with the formula and also kind of not. I think my favorite part was getting to write their first meeting, where instead of lots of soulmate name drama, they get to be like 'oh hey, we're soulmates, cool'.

At the end of the season, the Gallys go on a road trip from Montreal to Florida. There are a lot of feelings involved.

Oh, Alex Galchenyuk. I liked it better when I only had feelings about retired hockey players. The Habs being the Habs, he's become the designated whipping boy, and all I want is for people to stop being mean to him and for him to escape to a team that actually wants him. The other side of that is the Habs being the Habs means we get their media team making shipper videos for us. Anyway, this was my first full-length road trip fic. It's always been intimidating, because you have to figure out the pacing of the travel and the locations and come up with touristy or not-touristy things to do that line up with the emotional development of the relationship. But I had a blast with this. So many feelings everywhere.

I think this is one of those movies I appreciated more than I enjoyed, and I'm still trying to parse out my feelings about it. I thought I would have more feelings about it than I did (my feelings are easy to manipulate). Which isn't to say that I didn't have feelings. Just. Less than I thought. But I've been spoiled by watching Coco and The Shape of Water recently, so.

So I saw it. I didn't even realize that I had that many Blade Runner feelings until I saw the first trailer for this movie, because while I appreciate it, I don't think there's a lot of there there. As I have mentioned to other people, I think the first Blade Runner is about 90% mood and 10% content. The mood is amazing stuff, and the content isn't terrible, but I feel like it gets more credit than it deserves. I saw a comment to the effect that the first Blade Runner movie is both the most overrated and underrated film of all time.

My expectations were set pretty low, and they were met. It's another movie that's 90% mood and 10% content, and that mood is amazing and the content isn't entirely terrible. The sound design was kind of a mess at times, intrusive when it shouldn't be. The punches sounded faker than usual. It's a movie that does silence well, though. The pacing is slow and deliberate in a way that I appreciated.

If you do go watch it, I hope you enjoy staring at Ryan Gosling's face, because there's a lot of that. It's pushing 3 hours.

I took a parkour coaching certification course a few weeks ago, and I'm still processing it. It was three full days of training, both physical training in parkour but also training in how to approach coaching. It was definitely not the sort of thing I was expecting to be as draining as it was. Coming off a work week, it felt like I was being shoved into another job. Which it kind of was. Coaching is a job.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I was the only woman there, and I was the oldest person there by about 4-5 years. I was still the slowest and the weakest, but not by as much as I was afraid of. I could keep up with the whippersnappers for the most part. It was tough, but I could handle it.

The real challenge was in the coaching. I felt somewhat prepared, having done a ton of TAing in college and going to a million classes in the area and watching what the coaches do. It turns out having the responsibility for the physical and mental wellbeing of a group of people (a bunch of the people in my class were teenagers) is way different than trying to teach them what a for-loop is.

One of the sessions I had to teach was almost a complete disaster. Granted, I only had three minutes to come up with something and was forced out of my comfort zone to teach the thing. Yeah, that didn't turn out so well. But I survived it.

I survived the whole weekend, actually.

It was an intense three days. The group I train with is intense. They believe very strongly in the importance of being intense. The mental part was a part of that, because parkour is a mentally taxing discipline, and I've seen it in myself and others just how much our mental barriers can keep us back. I value their intensity, because it also comes with a deep sort of self-reflection.

I've watched their Women's International Parkour Weekend 2017 video a whole bunch of times, especially when I feel in need of motivation or inspiration. And I love the Traceuse Portrait Project that came out of it as well. Maybe next year, I'll be able to go in person and experience that energy for myself. I'm definitely thinking of going to Vancouver for another women's jam.

Anyway, now that the course is over, I still have to do 20 hours of supervised teaching. My first class is this Friday. Eep. I guess we'll see how this goes.

This past weekend was an awesome parkour event that left me exhausted, miserable, thrilled, thoughtful, and delighted. It's my second year going to it, and I think I got a lot more out of it this year than I did last year.

This isn't limited to parkour, but there's both a mental and a physical component to the sport. The first few years of training, I could mostly blame my issues on the physical side of things. I couldn't get my body parts to move in the right ways. I didn't have the arm or leg or core strength for anything. Some of these things are still true. My physical capabilities do limit what sorts of moves I can pull off and at what heights. But now the mental difficulties are starting to come into it.

There's a lot of talk about fear when it comes to parkour. How to approach that fear. How to overcome it. How to deal with it. You hit a certain point and then everything you try in parkour becomes about fear. It's not like, 'jumping off buildings' fear. It's 'trying to jump one step higher on a set of stairs' fear. I feel like recently, fear has dominated my training. I go to classes, which is great peer pressure and a great way to have a set schedule, but it's not great for doing what they call 'breaking' jumps. Finding something that is terrifying and breaking it down into smaller pieces until you achieve it.

I hadn't realized how much that fear had been eating away at me until this weekend. I would love to say that I overcame all of it and got in touch with my inner badass and now I'm doing ridiculous things. That's not how it went. It mostly went 'omg, I'm too tired to try this thing. man, I would love to do this move, but I'm not strong enough and I'll totally clip my toe. oh no, my feet are sore so I can't land anything' over and over and over again. There were a few exceptions. One session, the coaches decided that 'we're going to exhaust you until you can't think and then make you try to break a jump'. I exhausted myself, but I also broke a jump. Kind of. I went a little easy on myself. But that session stuck with me.

It's good to be shaken out of your own complacency. I need to find more ways of confronting my fear head-on. The solution isn't to throw myself at things and hope they work, either. I've already injured myself a few times that way. The solution, I think, is to carve out more training time for myself. To spend more time getting in touch with my fear. What it looks like. How it works. How valid is it. How to manage the risks when I do push myself past that line.

Easier said than done, of course, but I'm glad I can see the shape of it.

Also, I need a parkour icon, goddamn. I should make myself one.

I have a bike now. I've been resisting for a while, because biking is scary and I felt like I needed a leg up into being willing to do it. I do have a ton of friends who do bike, though, and they all seem to be really into it, so I let one of them talk me into going on a bike ride with her and really enjoyed it. And that led to the slippery slope of actually buying a bike and then riding it to work. And then riding it back home in the pouring rain. It does cut down my commute to about 1/3 to 1/4 of how long it used to take, so it's definitely going to be useful going forward, especially if I need to get someplace that's obnoxious to get to otherwise. I don't think I'm going to give up on walking everywhere, though. I like the slowed down pace and not having to worry about locking up my bike.

One of the awesome things about getting the bike is that I got it, plus accessories, from a local non-profit called Bikes Not Bombs, and the money I gave them will also hopefully support the cool work that they do both locally and abroad.

Other thing I have been fascinated by lately is Mastodon. It kind of is a roll-your-own Twitter clone, but it also is built to be less awful than Twitter? 500 word character limits, cut-tags (called content warnings) for hiding content if necessary, per-toot(tweet) privacy settings. Open source, free of advertising, strong moderation rules. And a way of viewing the local community through the 'local timeline', where you can see the stream of the entire site in one place.

You might be wondering how this idea scales, because a local timeline on Twitter would be a shitshow, and you're right. It would be. But the idea of Mastodon is to be decentralized, which is kinda difficult to grasp these days when all of our social media is so very centralized. What does that mean in this case? It means that there are a bunch of different webistes that run the Mastodon code, but all of these websites can integrate and talk to one another. The easiest comparable example is e-mail. You may be on yahoo.com and I may be on gmail.com, but we can still send e-mail to one another without issue. The way the local timeline is supposed to work is that you get to see the chatter that's happening in your particular instance, and hopefully you've built a cool little community there. But you can also follow people on other Mastodon servers and see their content and interact with them.

Anyway, I started investigating the idea of setting up a fannish Mastodon site ("instance" in the local parlance), where we can gather and talk about fannish things and have fandom-oriented content policies and code of conducts, but still be connected to the larger Mastodon universe if people want to be. It seems like I'm a bit late to the party, as someone else has started a similar project, but I've been invited to help out as well, so that could be fun. Hooray.

There's also a great set of newbie documentation that's been compiled if you're interested in exploring it further.

I'm not going to lie. It's kind of funky. The UI is generally pretty good, but it can be kind of weird at times. The Tweetdeck-but-not can feel kind of limiting. There's tons of Twitter features that haven't been implemented, whether by lack of time or by design. There's still some weirdness with the distributed nature that makes the integration less than seamless. But I still find it interesting and fun, and I'm a sucker for new things.

If you want to find me (at least for now), I'm @thedeadparrot@mastodon.social. My instance is closed down for new signups right now, but if you're interested, I can also dig up other reputable instances if need-be.

(or maybe just enough?)

Saw Moonlight for the first time last night. I've been waiting on seeing it, mostly because I wanted to be in the right mood for it. It's such a lovely, aching thing. Quiet and understated. Full of unspoken things. The sound design is fantastic. I think I wanted the ending to have more of a punch, but maybe it's better that it drifts off the way it does. The most amazing thing about it is that it's pretty much the opposite of Oscar bait, and yet.

In more fandom-focused topics, I saw a survey about ways of financially supporting fan creators on Twitter and I'm still trying to process my reaction to it. I am a creature of the gift-economy fandom. In some ways, this conversation is a sign of just how far the wider internet fan communities have come that we now do have mechanisms and models for supporting creators in ways that still mean that their content is still freely available. Probably spearheaded by dudes who are far more shameless when it comes to asking for money, but that's another post and conversation for another day.

I'm glad these models do exist, and I'm glad that creators who want or need that support can get them, whether it be through commissions or Patreon or tips or what have you. But I don't think it's ever going to be something I do for myself, whether it's paying into someone's Patreon or opening myself up for commissions. And to some degree, I know this is my privilege talking, because I'm pretty financially stable right now, and I have a work/life schedule that allows me to indulge in numerous hobbies at my leisure. But I would feel uncomfortable, having the pressure on me to provide work to the people who are giving me money, and it would feel uncomfortable to me to know that other people would feel pressured to write things for me because money changed hands.

And, I dunno. I feel fundamentally like I am happy to write for the feedback I get. Or, well, post for the feedback I get. *eyes up fic hoard full of wonky first drafts* And I feel like making that the basic exchange that happens for my writing makes everything simpler. Everything gets uglier when money gets involved.

In conclusion: WILL WORK FOR COMMENTS AND KUDOS. PLS INQUIRE WITHIN.

I saw a picture go around Twitter with drawing/art advice, and there's a lot of stuff here that I could unpack, but the one that spoke the loudest to me is 'Preserve & nurture your relationship to drawing (writing)' and as part of the sub-bullet of that 'JOY IS A TOOL. JOY IS A SKILL.'

I've been writing fanfic for a while, as I am sure many of you reading this have been as well, and I know that my relationship to my writing has changed quite a bit over the years. It's actually gotten healthier these past few years, I think. It's easy to fall into that mindset where your fic is only as good as the number of people who enjoy it. There's feedback loops to posting fic, getting kudos and likes and comments and maybe a reblog or two, and wanting to write more so you get more of that positive feedback. I have been learning to take pleasure in the act of writing itself. Cultivating the joy in just being able to craft a story.

And seeing that tweet in the middle of working on a new story (first draft done!) meant that I also got a chance to self-reflect on how my relationship to writing can and does change over the course of a story. Sometimes the relationship is easy and everything feels great and the words just come out. Sometimes the relationship is just okay and you just go through the motions of getting from one sentence to the next. Sometimes the relationship is straight up awful and every word is like pulling teeth. Sometimes you like your writing and sometimes you hate it. I'm learning to accept that as part of my process, too, even if it's frustrating and annoying and terrible.

It's work, in the same way that the writing itself is also work. And it's hard to maintain the healthy balances that I would like. But it's been useful for me. Maybe it will also be useful for you.

I always forget the annoying/bad parts of PAX every time I go back. The lines. The too many people. The orgy of consumerism. There's plenty that I enjoy, too, but man, there's plenty that I hate about it.

Here's an incomplete list of things I played and enjoyed. Mostly so that I don't forget them later.

Game I Tell People About When They Ask What I Saw At PAX

Elsinore - Do you ever experience Hamlet and ask yourself, Man, if only Ophelia were stuck in a time loop that she could only escape once she stopped everyone from murdering each other? Well, do I have a game for you. The build I played was still relatively new and filled with minor annoyances (omg, slow the fuck down so I can talk to you. so I went to the place and then did the thing, now what?). But I do love time loops as a mechanic, and I do love Shakespeare, so this is right up my alley.

Game That Is a Sequel to an Indie Game I Like

Steamworld Dig 2 - Stemworld Dig is such a pleasantly tight game. You dig your way through the ground, collecting gems along the way, and then making your way back up to the surface with your loot when your bag is full. This seems to be more of the same, though I'm a little worried about how some of the magic may be lost once it gets bigger. I also need to play Steamworld Heist which is very different mechanically, but also looks like a ton of fun.

Game That I Really Want to Play More Of Right Now

Ticket To Earth - There's apparently a storyline that goes with this game, but I didn't get to see it in the demo I played. It seems like a pretty fun tactical RPG designed for mobile devices, with the 'twist' being that the floor is made up of colored tiles. You can only walk on one set of colored tiles per turn and walking on those tiles charge up your special abilities. It was pleasing to both the parts of my brain that enjoy tactical turn-based games like XCOM and the parts of my brain that like Match-3 games.

Game That Compelled and Confused Me In Equal Measures But Hopefully Won't In the Final Version

Moonlighter - Both a management sim and an adventure-y dungeon crawl? The Dungeon Crawl parts were excellent and delightful. I didn't get the management sim parts, but that might be because it needs some more polish and/or explanation? The art is lovely and I stuck with it so long I missed texts telling me to meet up with my friends.

Game That Has an Adorable Slug-Cat in It

Rain World - I am not good at this game, but it was pretty, and I enjoyed watching other people play it.

Game That Is Basically Monument Valley, Which Isn't the Worst Thing in the World To Be

Where Shadows Slumber - Instead of weird 3-dimensional Escher-like manipulations, you have a lantern and manipulate shadows. Not as inherently awesome, but the devs were super open to feedback when talking to them, so hopefully the final product will sparkle.

Other things I did/saw:

Utility Kilts Booth - idk why, but this delighted me. Kilts! But functional ones! I'm sure it has a very specific niche and I'm happy for them.

Escape Room panel - I haven't really done escape rooms, but my friends wanted to see this panel, and I'm glad I did. It was fun to listen to the panelists talk about the struggle of being in a fledgling industry. I definitely need to gather people together to attempt one.

And it's knitting. Well, it's a new thing, and I already spent money on expensive yarn because I didn't know any better. Whoops.

I am enjoying it a lot, though. It's great for watching TV or movies. I like how quickly you can pick up the motions. I like making things.

Er, a lot of patterns are still intimidating right now, so I'm making a boring scarf with my expensive yarn, and maybe gift it to someone when I finish? Hopefully? I'm not even sure I have enough yarn right now to finish this scarf yet. But I'm learning things! And maybe I can raid the yarn stashes of a few of my friends at some point?

I also spent this whole weekend drowning in my Mike Richards feelings. He briefly resurfaced! He genuinely seems happy these days! I still desperately want future fic where he becomes a hotshot NHL coach and ends up on the team that Jeff Carter is GMing and they have Complicated Old People Feelings that I can eat with a spoon.

Speaking of Complicated Old People Feelings, I am getting so, so close to finishing a first draft of my X-Men fic. I think I just have one more scene left! And then I will sit down and cry from how much work this fic needs. But that's okay! Making things! I like doing it!

Chugging along with this one fic that I thought might just be emotional arcs, and it turns out that it's also like, growing a plot as well. It's the worst! Why, writing, whyyyyyy.

I finished reading the psychic wolves books. I'm not sure if I would recommend them to others, necessarily. But they were generally entertaining and had fun worldbuilding with their fake Vikings who bang each other.

Oh, and I wrote some psychic wolf fic (for Lupercalia) myself:

sweeter than heaven, hotter than hell (4414 words) by thedeadparrot
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Hockey RPF
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jeff Carter/Mike Richards
Characters: Mike Richards, Jeff Carter
Additional Tags: Psychic Wolves, Plot What Plot/Porn Without Plot
Summary:

Arnold's the one who's getting very thoroughly laid wolf-style, and Mike's here in his hotel room, very much not getting laid. Good thing Jeff's around to help him out.

It was delightful, ridiculously self-aware and meta, but with a genuine heart at the center of it.

I was having a good Saturday already, but seeing it with [personal profile] bironic made it all the better. :DDDD

Talk to me if you've seen it as well.
