2017 fic wrap up

I wrote a lot of fic this year. Shamefully, because of hockey. Which I still don't watch, but which I now know too much about. Shame. Shame, I say.

Yuletide Reveal

Perception (1649 words) by thedeadparrot
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Chocolate (2008)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Zen (Chocolate), Moom (Chocolate), Masashi (Chocolate)
Additional Tags: Character Study, POV Second Person
Summary:

Learning to understand the world.

I didn't actually sign up for Yuletide, but this set of requests came through the pinch hit list, and I was like 'ooh, I can write that.' and technically it was because District B13, my favorite terrible parkour movie, but this one was a more intriguing challenge, so I decided to write this instead. I love second person POV but it's not something I use very much anymore. This was a great chance to play around with it because of the character and her voice.

Hockey RPF

Starting with things I should have cross posted but didn't, I'm sorry.

then we do it again (8516 words) by thedeadparrot
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Hockey RPF
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jeff Carter/Mike Richards
Characters: Jeff Carter, Mike Richards
Additional Tags: Soulmate-Identifying Marks, Alternate Universe - Soulmates, Reconciliation, Flashbacks
Summary:

Everyone knows that soulmate names can fade -- the most common reasons are death and divorce. They aren't supposed to come back.

I'm not the biggest fan of soulmate AUs, but I do like all the ways in which fandom has messed around with the formula. This was kind of messing with the formula and also kind of not. I think my favorite part was getting to write their first meeting, where instead of lots of soulmate name drama, they get to be like 'oh hey, we're soulmates, cool'.

put it in the rearview mirror (16497 words) by thedeadparrot
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Hockey RPF
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Alex Galchenyuk/Brendan Gallagher
Characters: Alex Galchenyuk, Brendan Gallagher
Additional Tags: Road Trips, First Time
Summary:

At the end of the season, the Gallys go on a road trip from Montreal to Florida. There are a lot of feelings involved.

Oh, Alex Galchenyuk. I liked it better when I only had feelings about retired hockey players. The Habs being the Habs, he's become the designated whipping boy, and all I want is for people to stop being mean to him and for him to escape to a team that actually wants him. The other side of that is the Habs being the Habs means we get their media team making shipper videos for us. Anyway, this was my first full-length road trip fic. It's always been intimidating, because you have to figure out the pacing of the travel and the locations and come up with touristy or not-touristy things to do that line up with the emotional development of the relationship. But I had a blast with this. So many feelings everywhere.

Wild Magic (3587 words) - Mike Richards, I just want you to be happy in Kenora while deer hunting and ice fishing and stuff. This one is all about me writing about magic and deer butchering and grappling with how Mike Richards can be happy.
sweeter than heaven, hotter than hell (4414 words) - PSYCHIC WOLVES. A fun trope. I think this could have been like, an epic, but I cut it down to just the filthy porn parts. You're welcome? Maybe?
The First Day of the Rest of Your Life (8443 words) - Willie Mitchell is great! Also retired! Living his best Tofino tourism board life! I loved the idea of Mike resolving some of his retirement issues by getting banged by the Mitchells because this is fandom, and I can do what I want to.
this burning desire (2386 words) - My id came up with the idea and ran with it, but then I had to figure out how to end it, and it turned into something a lot sadder than intended. Mike, you are still the saddest.
It's Only Noise (5092 words) - A companion piece to last year's Pacific Rim AU. I had Mike summer in Kenora feelings, and it made sense to try to write it into the existing fic with a lot of holes on how Mike was feeling at the time.
To Do Wrong (14385 words) - I wrote this after watching the Blade Runner 2049 trailer. As a writer, I like trying to capture feelings or a mood into words, and this was me trying to do that over 14k words of Mike and Jeff trying to figure out their relationship. I'm not someone who does a lot of established relationship fic. It's just not my jam. But this was the perfect vehicle for me. Two grizzled old vets trying to figure out how to make it work and how to survive in the aftermath of their lives and decisions.
Five Rangers Mike Richards Shared a Bed with Platonically and One Greyhound He Didn't (2008 words) - This is probably a joke that goes on for too long and only makes sense to probably all of about two people. But it was nice to write something lighthearted and goofy after living with miserable grizzled vets for a while.
Toque You Long Enough (13249 words) - Dads falling in love with other dads was not a thing I realized I needed until after Dream Daddy became a thing. This was written in such a scattershot fashion I'm amazed it holds together at all, especially because my main goal was to drag out the awkward dad flirting for as long as possible. I also spent a lot of time googling 'X dad jokes' so I could name each chapter.
sleight of hand, twist of fate (7164 words) - LOOK. I realize that half this list is like 'I have too many Mike/Jeff feelings' and all of them are weird variants on the same theme of like, 'how do they deal with their changing relationship?' This one comes down to 'baby hockey players dealing with psychic visions of their happy and unhappy futures' and maybe they'll be able to work it out but also maybe not.

MCU-ish

We Happy Few (1730 words) - I came out of the Wonder Woman movie wanting Steve Rodgers/Diana crossover fic, so this was kind of a doodle for me about what that would look like. So many Steves. So many Chrises.
Vacation (749 words) - The first of many pornathon ficlets. I love Tony and Rhodey and all the complications of their relationship. I could only squeeze the feelings in around the edges here, but hopefully it works anyway.

Star Wars

Clothes (750 words) - more pornathon, more love for Poe/Finn/Rey. At some point, I will probably end up writing some OT4 fic for The Last Jedi, especially if [personal profile] azephirin has anything to say about it.

Don't Trust the B---

'Til You Make It (4100 words) - Written as a gift. I wouldn't have thought to write about these two, but it was on a list of potential pairings that my requestee asked for, and I looked at it and went 'huh'. I hadn't written any comedy in a while, and the show has such distinctively dark humor. I got a few comments on how well I managed to make it work, so I'm proud of that.

Queer as Folk (UK)

First (744 words) - Pornathon (contd.) I went on a bit of a reunion tour, reading a bunch of old QAF (UK) fic I had loved, and that was why this pairing pinged me as much as it did.

Critical Role

Journey (747 words) - pornathon. I have been watching Critical Role for a while, but I haven't felt particularly fannish about it. This was me dipping my toes into it. I doubt I'll get any further than this, but it was fun.

HTGAWM

Secrets (749 words) - yup, pornathon. Just some Connor misery and pain.

X-Men (movieverse)

(The Answer Is) Blowin' In The Wind (7769 words) - This was a weird one. I wrote it as a gift, and it's not exactly bad or anything, but it does feel like a weird mashup of a bunch of other fics I've written before. I don't know how I feel about it.
Nature (745 words) - pornathon? This was the last week of it, and I just wanted to write something really really fucked up. Charles and Erik can easily go to that place.

Leitmotif(s) of the year: Stupid hockey players figuring out how to be happy. Oh god, why am I doing a thing called pornathon when I don't even like writing porn that much.
My best story of this year: Too much written this year over too many different tones/styles/fandoms.
My favorite story of this year: Don't do this to me. :(
Most popular story: We Happy Few was unsurprisingly massively popular due to the fact that Steve Rogers is massively popular and Wonder Woman is/was massively popular.
Story of mine most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: To Do Wrong. I get that a Blade Runner AU is a tough sell, especially one where there's about an equal ratio of plot to feelings, But plz love me.
Most fun story to write: Toque You Long Enough. It was such a low-pressure fic and I could just keep heaping indignities on the both of them whenever I felt like it.
Sexiest story: this burning desire, probably. Everyone loves some humiliation kink, right?
Hardest story to write: Hmm, probably Perception. It was a lot of things I hadn't really tried a whole lot of recently, and it was tough to get into that mindset long enough to finish it.
Biggest Disappointment: Eh, I'm not sure. Maybe Secrets? Pornathon was definitely a marathon in terms of churning out fic every week, so those were very hit-or-miss.
Biggest Surprise: Toque You Long Enough. God damn, I can't believe I wrote 13k of kidfic. What have I become?
Story I haven't yet written, but intend to: I honestly don't know. I have not been writing much as of late. Maybe I'll write more Gallys fic? Somehow find another story to write about Mike Richards? Maybe I'll manage to escape hockey altogether and find a new fandom to terrorize. Who knows?
