Yuletide Recsssss

I haven't done this in a bit, but here's some stuff I read and enjoyed from Yuletide this year.

Gentle Slice Of Life Fics

Somehow I managed to read these one after the other, and they were very thematically linked, two quiet stories about finding contentment in a new normal and being in love. Of course their normal is radically different from what we'd consider normal, but that's what fiction is for, no?

It's a Curious Thing (1853 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Broken Earth Series - N. K. Jemisin
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Alabaster & Damaya | Essun | Syenite, Damaya | Essun | Syenite/Innon
Characters: Alabaster (Broken Earth), Damaya | Essun | Syenite, Innon (Broken Earth)
Additional Tags: between, Happy Times on the Island, Bit of Might have Been
Summary:

It's a curious thing to be happy.

Syenite does not have the trick of it. So she scowls at the rare warm beautiful day. She scowls at the sunlight that reflects brilliant gold on the blue water and the white capped waves. Like a burst vesicle spilling everywhere.

From Santa With Love (2795 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Genghis Khan - Miike Snow (Music Video)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Gold Nose Villain/Secret Agent (Genghis Khan - Miike Snow)
Characters: Gold Nose Villain (Genghis Khan - Miike Snow), Secret Agent (Genghis Khan - Miike Snow)
Additional Tags: Redemption, Christmas, Christmas Fluff, Reformed Villains, domestic life
Summary:

Being a reformed villain isn’t easy. Not when there’s faking your own death, administrative bullshit and staff Christmas parties to deal with.

SQUIRREL GIRL

Less shippy than the tags might indicate, which, tbh, I was happy about. Full of madcap Squirrel Girl enthusiasm in all the best ways.

Nat Geo (1102 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Doreen Green/Kraven the Hunter
Characters: Doreen Green, Kraven the Hunter
Additional Tags: Yuletide Treat
Summary:

Kraven needs a plus one to the National Geographic Anniversary Gala. Doreen was born for this.

Boston Feels 'R' Us

Good Will Hunting is still one of those movies/fandoms that I have too many feelings about, even if it's hastag-problematic in a lot of ways. Anyway, this is a lovely getting-together fic between Will and Chuckie which gets Boston right even if it calls it Dunkin instead of Dunks.

but we carry the weight (5720 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Good Will Hunting (1997)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Will Hunting/Chuckie Sullivan
Characters: Will Hunting, Chuckie Sullivan
Additional Tags: Drunk Sex, Friends to Lovers, Future Fic, surprise feelings about moving across the country, handjobs, Anal Sex, thanks aliza, pornetry
Summary:

“Come out and visit,” Will says, next time they’re on the phone.

Yuletide Recs (Part 1/many, hopefully)

Whew, started making my way through the giant list of Yuletide stories. (2678? OMG?) Here's some of the stuff I have read and liked. I still have to go back and dig deeper into some of these fandoms, so there may be more (especially around HTGAWM and Captive Prince). Give me all your recs, too!

Five (1477 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: How to Get Away with Murder
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Wes Gibbins, Laurel Castillo, Michaela Pratt, Connor Walsh, Asher Millstone
Additional Tags: Yuletide
Summary:

A reflection on the Keating Five at the start of the semester.

This was my gift story! It's a really lovely bit of character studying. I am always in favor of lots of different POVs looking at the same thing, and I love the little bits of backstory sprinkled throughout this.

Winner Takes All (3804 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Good Will Hunting (1997) RPF
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Ben Affleck/Matt Damon
Characters: Ben Affleck, Matt Damon
Additional Tags: mostly gen with a little kissing thrown in for good measure, Bromance, Gay Chicken, Yuletide Treat, Bad Photoshop Jobs
Summary:

“Thanks for bringing my dick back into the spotlight, you asshole."

Matt and Ben play a friendly game with the media.

This delighted me greatly. There's obviously been a lot of effort put into the great fake news stories, but the best parts are the easy patter of the dialogue between Matt and Ben. It gives their relationship a lived-in feeling that I love.

The Wildest Dreams of Wild Men (7604 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Good Will Hunting (1997)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Will Hunting/Chuckie Sullivan
Characters: Will Hunting, Chuckie Sullivan, Morgan O'Mally, Billy McBride
Additional Tags: Post-Movie(s), Friendship, First Time
Summary:

Will goes home.

Everyone knows my Boston feelings by now, I think, so this was bound to end up on here for that reason alone. But it's also a nice look at trying to refamiliarize yourself with a place you've left behind, how to settle into old-new relationships, romantic and not.

Unit Cohesion (4851 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: XCOM: Enemy Unknown (2012)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Central Officer Bradford/Dr. Raymond Shen/Dr. Vahlen
Characters: Central Officer Bradford, Dr. Vahlen, Dr. Raymond Shen
Additional Tags: Slow Burn, Threesome
Summary:

Bradford's job is to manage the temperamental geniuses upon which XCOM depends. They have history, however, and he's finding himself drawn into their present.

I love being surprised by stories. XCOM is one of those games where the main characters are ciphers who exist mostly to explain things to you, so when you stumble across fic that is about them having OT3 shenanigans, you go waaaaaat? And then you read it, and it is great. Really well-developed relationships and building steadily to the ending it earns.

Fraternity (8541 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 2/2
Fandom: Captive Prince - C. S. Pacat
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Auguste | Damen (Captive Prince), Damen/Laurent (Captive Prince)
Characters: Damen (Captive Prince), Auguste (Captive Prince), Laurent (Captive Prince)
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Fraternity
Summary:

Against expectations, Damen and Auguste become best bros and help each other discover their dreams.

This was a lot of fun! I have a weakness for college/high school AUs when they manage to replicate the character dynamics in interesting ways, and I really liked this one. And I am, as always, happy to learn more about and spend time with Auguste, whose presence looms large in canon.

Italy, the Amalfi Coast (1188 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Luther (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: John Luther/Alice Morgan
Characters: John Luther, Alice Morgan
Additional Tags: Travel, Murder
Summary:

Alice is wearing a black swimsuit, a one piece, and the clean lines of her are shark-sleek and deadly but her smile’s all for him.

Italy, the Amalfi coast. There's blood in the water.

Beautiful imagery, and the author manages to capture Alice's strangeness very well.

Oh, and if anyone wants to guess my stories (3 in Yuletide, 1 in Madness), feel free to. I'll write you >500 words on anything you want if you guess correctly. I think I've blabbed about two of them to anyone who will listen, and my last two probably aren't anything that anyone would wander across by accident.

A collection of stuff

1.

If you've been eagerly awaiting the newest part of the mafia AU, [personal profile] merisunshine36 wrote (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, which is an awesome story from Sean's POV about the early days, and I love it so much. It has babymafioso!Mark. How can you possibly resist?

2.

Tonight is the Autumn Moon Festival! I totally forgot all about it until I looked outside and saw the moon last night:

moon! )

No moon cakes for me, but hopefully it will still be clear out, and I can make :D faces at the moon all night.

3.

I went to the zoo yesterday! There were many animals! So I will now post many pictures:
annnnnnimals )

4.

People should not enable me. Ever. In any circumstances. It's just a bad idea all around.

HAPPY YULETIDE DAY

I can has awesomely hilarious Middleman fic!

Five Times Wendy Flew Solo, which is fun and ridiculous and involves giant cybernetic penguins. Let me repeat that for you: GIANT CYBERNETIC PENGUINS. It is so delightful and nerdy, and it makes me sigh happily. I just love it so much.

Anyway, I am catching a flight today, so I am loading up as much fic as possible before I leave. SO MUCH FIC. I want to roll around in it all.

No, really. You guys need to read some Ted Chiang

Ted Chiang's latest novella is up for free online: The Lifecycle of Software Objects

It's about AIs and online communities and about software companies and it's about something even more than that, about the relationships we forge with other people and other things. His world-building is, as always, exquisite. I am still amazed by his understanding of human beings and the networks they form, even when his individual characters don't always grab me.

Also, I found an online copy of one of his best stories: Story Of Your Life.

It's about motherhood and communicating with aliens and about language and about perception. It feels real and painful and lived-in, and it handles the concept of motherhood in a way that's not creepy or gender-essentialist. I don't want to give away too much, because part of the pleasure of reading the story is watching it unfold in front of you. There's no real 'twist' to the story, but seriously, you need to read it to fully experience it.

Oh, and his short story collection, Stories Of Your Life And Others is being released on Monday, and I still kind of want to buy copies of it for everyone I know. I'm only half-joking about this.

story rec

So as a result of Mammothfail II: The 'For the love of fucking god, this is 101 shit here' version, I stumbled across a really cool story Nira and I by Shweta Narayan. It's lovely and full of cool imagery (which totally hits my weather kink, shut up), and I like that the world here doen't feel European or white. Check it out!

image editing stuff

Also, I'm thinking about putting together an 001-level Gimp icon tutorial with lots of handholding, because that interface is pretty scary for newbies, I gotta say. It'll focus on the basics, really, the particular kinds of tools and what they're used for.

But I'd love feedback on what you guys are interested in learning. Layers? Brushes? Selection tools? Color futzing? All of the above?

If there's a particular icon of mine you'd like to see taken apart and recreated (the simpler the better), let me know about that to.

Female Character Recs!

I've been planning to do this for [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon for a while, but I keep on failing somehow. But yes, female character recs! A mix of gen and het focus on female characters. This is hardly a complete listing of all the stories about female characters I have loved, but here are few that have stuck with me over the years.

I need to use this icon more often.

I adore Arthurian legend the way I love comic book canon, in the way they're both so easy to retell and to retell in different ways. New details can be added or old details can be discarded. It's all okay!

Also, Yuletide stories are up. All 2426 of them. I received two very wonderful presents:

Aprocypha (Carnivale, Sofie) - I love Sofie like a crazy thing, and this story captures her less-than-pleasant relationship with her mother and her strange, tense relationship with Ben in the first season. It's wonderfully moody and the Sofie voice is dead on.

Dangerous Neighborhoods (District B13, Damien/Leito) - Oh, man. This was, just, exactly what I wanted. Character and politics and the stupid little details of everyday life. This Damien is exactly how I see him, idealistic and pragmatic at the same time. And his relationship with Leito is so right, tense but comfortable. Also, Lola shows up and is awesome.

And on top of that, there are 2424 other stories to read and enjoy! I may eventually post a recs list, but I'm not sure. We'll see.

Odds and Ends

1. Vid rec! To Touch The Face of God by [livejournal.com profile] destina. It's just a stunning ode to the U.S. space program, and it's about human yearning and human struggle and human sacrifice. I used to have a poster of a space shuttle hanging over my bed, no joke, and I wanted to work for NASA, and this reminded me of why. Seriously, go watch it.

2. Saw Across the Universe, finally. It was about what I expected. The musical sequences were pretty good. The stuff in between was not so much. The story was hacked together badly, and it seemed to be ripping off Rent a bit too much. In order for it to be successful, I think it would need to distance itself from the Beatles mythos, and it didn't.

3. I have spiffied up my laptop, just in time for me to not use it so much during the school year. Whoops.

4. The US seems to be failuring during these closing days of the Olympics. Except for the women's soccer team. They're still badass.

5. I am not very surprised by the cancellation of SGA, and its subsequent transformation into a direct-to-DVD movie series. It's probably (a) cheaper and (b) more lucrative for MGM, and SG-1's already done it.

Coming out of my pseudo-isolation to let you know that someone wrote me a NYR fic (OMG I've gotten three stories now, and I have no idea what I did to deserve this).

It's Dune-fic, Paul introspection, and it's just wonderful.

Go read.

Remix, challenge

So [livejournal.com profile] remix_redux is up! Or going up, at the very least. I am so excited about it.

My remixer wrote me Around the World and Back Again (Grace Jones’ Polar Opposite Remix) which is a remix of Singapore from House's POV. It's also way awesome and wonderful and stuff like that. You should go read, like, now.

Also, a random sort of meme-type thing. If you can guess which story I wrote, I will write you a ficlet. The only hint I will give is that it's in a fandom that I've written before. So that should narrow things down, somewhat.

Also, all comments are screened to protect the innocent. Or not so innocent.

Lots of random fannish stuff

A meme stolen from somewhere else, Five fics you would rec to someone outside of fandom.

It's an interesting thing to consider, what kind of face you would want to put on to people outside of fandom. This more of a gen-ish list, for people who aren't in fandom at all, maybe trying to ween them into the fannish way of seeing things. So yeah, these aren't necessarily the best I've read, but they are certainly up there.

Anyway:
the recs )

I was tagged by [livejournal.com profile] viciouswishes, Post a list of your top five favorite fics you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same.

the stories and the explanations )

Tagging [livejournal.com profile] zauberer_sirin, [livejournal.com profile] savemoony, [livejournal.com profile] lykaios, [livejournal.com profile] luvinaoshi and [livejournal.com profile] ignited.

But wait! There's more!

So I've been messing around with the GIMP, and so I've made a couple fanfic covers for a couple people. (much of the credit goes to [livejournal.com profile] gender for the gorgeous textures)

The stories:

1. [livejournal.com profile] savemoony's From Princeton, With Love [cover] - An awesome House spy AU that crosses over with Alias. At the moment, it's still a WIP, but it's still a lot of fun.

2. [livejournal.com profile] queenzulu's Lights To Guide You Home [cover] - Five ways House found out about Cuddy's miscarriage. It's quiet and sparse and all the more powerful for it.

Yuletide squeeage

OMG [livejournal.com profile] yuletide!

My Santa wrote me the best fic, like, ever. It's A Jianghu Fairytale, and it's just awesome. I've totally been craving Crouching Tiger fic since forever, and not just Crouching Tiger fic, but Crouching Tiger fic about Li Mu Bai and Shu Lien, who are just about the most kick ass people in existence. And my Santa got them down perfectly, which makes me oh, so happy.

A sample:

Shu Lien liked to think of that later, much later, when Li Mu Bai was famous and the man who would be her husband was dead. Sometimes she mentioned it, when they were together. She'd say, "Remember when we met? Remember when you were dying?"

And he would say, "I remember you."

So, yes. Go read everything. And be happy.

A list of Superman Returns fic on LJ

Everything I've read so far is good.

My peronal favorite is Wave If You See Me From Afar which takes place pre-Superman Returns, and has an awesome Lois. I am a sucker for an awesome Lois.
