Fanfic writing meme
I have been writing after a bit of a drought! I am planning on staying in during the day today and seeing how much I can get done. Also, um, watching the Olympics some more. The weather is so gross today.
I am also considering signing up for
xmenbigbang, but I only have vague ideas of what I would want to write, and I've only ever written three stories over 15k words. I'm not sure I have the endurance to pull that sort of thing off.
I spotted this meme around tumblr, but I don't really use tumblr much, so here it is.
Directions: Give me number(s) in the comments and I will answer the corresponding question.

- How did you get interested in fanfiction?
- What was your first fandom? Your first OTP?

- Favorite AU to read? To write?
- What’s your favorite genre to read? To write?
- What are your biggest fanfiction pet peeves?
- Do you have any crackships?
- Do you have any ships you don’t like or used to but don’t anymore?
- Are there any kinks you love to read? Any you avoid?
- Do you prefer to read fanfics in first, second, or third-person POVs? To write?
- Do you read exclusively NC-17 fanfics, or will you read any rating?
- What’s the latest you’ve stayed up reading a fanfic? Writing one?
- Is there a website you’re partial to when you search for fanfiction, or do you more read whatever you can get your hands on? When it comes to writing, is there a website you prefer to use for publishing your fanfics?
- How long have you been “18”?
- Are there any plot ideas you want to either do or see someone else do?
- Do you associate certain songs with certain ships or fanfics? If you could make a playlist for your OTP(s), which songs would be on there?
- Do you follow any RPs? Do you RP?
- What’s on your fanfiction rec list?

I love so many kinks! A lot of times, I'll end up reading a kink that I'm iffy on and just get converted by how well a writer can make the kink work emotionally and psychologically.
Out of my bulletproof kinks, though, hmm. I love pining, like when this one character has all these ~*feelings*~ and is just incapable of processing it. The more stoic and cranky and mean-spirited the character, the better. I love undercover stories, not necessarily X and Y go undercover as a couple (though they are also great), but stories where there's a tension between how a character is perceived and who they actually are. I love fuck-or-die dubcon like Aliens Made Them Do It or Pon Farr.
Kinks I don't particularly care for include mpreg and Alpha/Omega (and obviously, they're related). Cross-gen and mentor/student generally don't do it for me either. I can usually be swayed to read the latter two if they're done in a way that navigates my squicks, but the first two are pretty close to hard limits for me.
Are there any plot ideas you want to either do or see someone else do?

Hmmm, this is difficult considering how much fandom has decided to embrace AUs. I used to love them a lot, but nowadays, I feel overexposed to them and some of my love has soured. I still write them and read them, of course, but I think it feels like fannish business as usual to me now instead of something novel and exciting.
Uh, now that I have avoided your question to go on a tangent, hmmm. I don't think I've ever read a cyberpunk AU that I have really disliked. They're usually a lot of fun in the worldbuilding people do, and they tickle the computer nerd parts of my brain quite a bit. Also, they're not super common, so they haven't worn out my welcome yet.
I think the most fun AUs to write are evil!AUs like Star Trek mirrorverse or even things like mafia-verse in TSN. There's something really fun about balancing the canon characterizations with their evil, and there's something wonderfully perverse about imagining horrible things for the characters to do.
Do you have any ships you don’t like or used to but don’t anymore?
Yes.
Okay, okay. I know you want to know which ones they are. I have a lot of ships I don't like, but I only have a few that I really hate, usually because they are super popular in fandom and it aggravates me even though I know that my hatred isn't rational. These include Harry/Draco, Steve/Tony, and Clark/Lex.
Do you prefer to read fanfics in first, second, or third-person POVs? To write?
I prefer tight third-person and second person fic to read. I hate first person. A lot. I can only barely tolerate it in pro-fic anyway. I know second person gets a lot of hate for being pretentious, but I like the way it floats emotionally between third and first person, distanced from things and yet right up and close and personal. I don't ever find it disorienting, but that's probably due to acclimation to the style.
I prefer to write tight third person to write. I've played around with second person before, and I like to think that I even used to be okay at it, but I don't find myself missing it. I don't know. I think the stories I wanted to tell changed.

HA. Too many to count? I'm really a BOFQ at this point. I think what's getting my goat right now is bland, any-two-guys AUs, especially when I love canon and want some more exploration of the canon dynamics between characters.
Also, people making shit up about programming and computers. Seriously, just go vague and noncommittal and it won't bother me. It's when there are whole swaths of incorrect statements that my brain starts wanting to explode in my head.
What’s on your fanfiction rec list?
I don't know! I try to tailor my recs to the person, and I've loved so many different fics for so very many different reasons that it makes it hard for me to do general recs.

Uh, late. I think I've ended up awake at 4am reading fic after staying out too late doing other things. I've definitely stayed up late because I wanted to keep reading something I liked, though I think 2am is the hard limit for me there. And I remember once writing some
Do you associate certain songs with certain ships or fanfics? If you could make a playlist for your OTP(s), which songs would be on there?
Answered over on LJ as well, but c/ped for posterity.
I do sometimes! I used to do it more often when I used to make fanmixes, but I haven't really made one for a while. Nowadays, I think about songs more in the terms of whether or not I could make a vid out of it or if I have seen a good vid for it. As such, Charles/Erik is currently all about Adele's "Rolling in the Deep", Nina Simone's "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and the Beatles' "Revolution".
