well, it's my (fandom) birthday, too
Today is my sixth fandom birthday!
Six years ago, a wee parrot decided she was going to try her hand at this 'fanfic' thing she was reading so much of. It could have been great! It could have been epic! She could hear the reviews already: A fresh new voice with unmistakable talent! Stylistically adventurous with a dash of realism! A story that makes some sort of sense and doesn't make you want to gouge your own eyes out!
Needless to say, it was none of those things.
For those of you who are too afraid to click the link, it contains: bad formatting; short, really crappy paragraphing; horrific dialogue; even worse characterization; structural trickery that I was not good enough to handle; and just general n00bishness.
What can I say? I was young and foolish! And maybe a little clueless and too full of myself! It happens! Besides, that fandom was not writing the stories I wanted from it, so I had to do it myself. You can't judge me for that!
So, how about you guys? What was the first piece of fic you ever wrote? Did it suck? Were you really fucking amazing? Does is it still on the internet or have you made a concerted effort to destroy every copy in existence? Did you post it to a mailing list? Do you even remember mailing lists? Did it get published in a zine? Are you a lot fandom-older than me? Do you still occasionally reread your first fic to remind yourself how far you've come? Do you occasionally repost it in your journal to remind everyone else how far you've come?
C'mon, flist! Tell me all about your own embarrassing (or not so embarrassing) first fics so we can all commiserate.
It'll be fun. No, really.

In third grade we had to do retellings of "The Three Little Pigs" and mine was about Emperor Palpatine.

And yeah, I totally wrote a crappy Star Wars fic in fifth grade, where like my Mary Sue visited this vacation planet and then it was ATTACKED BY HUTTS. Or something like that. I was just referring to active involvement in organized fandom, personally.

And yeah, I was surprisingly lucky to have never been really discouraged in my n00bish days as well. Fandom has always been kind to me.

Here's little 12 year old Amy (posing as an 18 year old with a pseud). She finds HP fandom, back in 2002! It is terrific, and she spends many hours corrupting her brain, and decides to write some Tom/Ginny fic.
...
It sucked; she finds out she can't write dialogue (still can't), and nobody ever sees it. Then, about a month later, the writer brain kicks in, she writes a Draco/Ginny drabble that people liked (posted on LJ). In 2009, as herself (the real, now 17, Amy), she fixes it up and thinks, well, it was quite good for a kid and puts it on the AO3, orphaned.

And I totally respect you for putting that fic up on AO3, even if you did orphan it. I didn't even have the guts to do that, myself.

I thought long and hard about orphaning it, and decided I can always claim it as my own in speech, I'd just prefer that J. Random User not know I wrote it. I abandoned a few friends when I dropped out of HP fandom.
Formatting can be fixed! Even if your structures were a bit too overdone (like mine were), it's still an ode to fandom as a n00b, which is important to have :). *encourages*
