I strongly agree about the lone genius concept. It's especially egregious in science, where every brilliant idea has to be reproducible and potentially disprovable to collect real-world credit, and where everything depends on previous work (and, to a greater or lesser degree, on all other science.)
I do think that the obnoxious genius who gets a free pass on social skills and general human decency is a fantasy figure for a good many people, even some of us female people, especially in nerd-heavy genres. I've never yearned to be a bully, but wouldn't it be nice to have my gaffes and defects turned into endearing foibles? Wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone at work, even the pointy-haired bosses, had to take me seriously (or at least pretend to) instead of including me in memos about irresponsible office supply usage?
There are still so few female models of this genre that I can't look askance at women who identify with the male versions.
