It's been kind of shitty this week, watching lots of terrible shit go down. Mostly as a spectator, but even then, it's been exhausting and stressful. So to combat this, Here is a list of happier things that I have experienced this week:

1) Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey - I have very many and very conflicting feelings about this. I love Neil DeGrasse Tyson, and I love his passion for educating and science, and both come through loud and clear here. I love its willingness to take potshots at people it feels are anti-science (lol, creationists) and its willingness to talk about the scientific community as a bunch of people with their own petty jealousies and biases. But idk, I think I might be too old and jaded and cynical to give myself over to its relentless optimism. There's still joy in it, though. Our universe is bizarre and terrifying and beautiful. I feel comforted by my insignificance in the face of it.

2) Monument Valley - It's a very short game, and it's not a challenging game, but it's so achingly lovely. The tagline for it is: "AN ILLUSORY ADVENTURE OF IMPOSSIBLE ARCHITECTURE AND FORGIVENESS" How can you not fall in love, just a little bit, with a game like that?

3) Jezebel's article on Disney Penises (NSFW) - So odd and so goofy and so detailed. IDEK, man. I also like the idea that it might make dudes confront what sexual objectification really is.

4) that fic writing meme

5) Getting rid of the janky carpeting at my new place.

6) Hummus and chips - I am out of hummus. Must acquire more.

7) The season finale of Korra - I've already raved about this season, so I'm going to just drop this GIF here and let you think about your life choices if you haven't been keeping up with book 3.

8) Writing! I have been slowly crawling my way through the Bucky/Natasha. Previous estimate of 8k for the first draft seems to be a vast underestimate. I'm reaching that number right now with still a good chunk of story to go. Sigh.

9) New furniture for the new place! New furniture that can be taken apart and put back together again like Legos!

1) Clean my fridge
1a) But not my sink

2) Install Rockbox on my Clip+ MP3 player.
2a) Consider whether or not it makes sense to transcode podfic into Opus
2b) Feel sad because Opus isn't supported by Rockbox quite yet
2c) Wonder if you're snotty enough to use FLAC for everything

3) Read political blogs
3a) Boggle at everything Mitt Romney says
3b) Wait for The Daily Show to comment on that last thing Mitt Romney just said, because OMG DID YOU JUST HEAR THAT?????

4) Play video games
4a) Attempt to debug Wine's audio problems using ambiguous search terms
4b) Play free versions of classic games
4b1) Remember that you hate FPS games
4b2) Keep playing anyway
4c) Buy the latest Humble Bundle out of sheer love for the Dustforce soundtrack
4c1) Enjoy Dustforce, the game, itself.
4c2) Wait for stabler Linux versions of the other games in the bundle
4d) Develop an obsession with following the successes and failures of Kickstarter games.

5) Cook actual food

6) Eat lots of farmers' market apples, because they are so tasty and so delicious

7) Attempt to learn how to use Tumblr
7a) Feel old

8) Play with Greasemonkey

9) Watch Samurai Champloo

10) Go on a book borrowing spree from the library
10a) Accidentally get too many books at the same time and frantically try to get through them all
10b) Fail
10c) Refuse to turn your Kindle's wireless back on until you've finished this one, dammit

1. OMG PEOPLE, STOP BEING ON TOP OF YOUR YULETIDE SIGNUPS, YOU ARE MAKING ME FEEL LIKE A SLACKER.

2. Up will never stop making me cry like I'm not bitter and mean and cynical.

3. You wish you had this pumpkin cheesecake:
the cheesecake your cheesecake could look like )

4. I tried to play the Bioshock demo. Alone. While it was night out. Um, I might have been so freaked out that I had to turn it off so that I wouldn't have horrific nightmares for the rest of the week. Additionally, I had a similar experience with Atwood's Oryx and Crake. Don't even fucking talk to me about pigoons.

5. I am half-watching Young Sherlock Holmes, but I can't get over the Watson. He's not nearly badass enough, and the kid who plays Holmes does not sufficiently impress me with his brainz. But it's sort of cute. Kind of. And has bad 80's special effects. The premise is almost entirely, "What if Holmes and Watson were in Hogwarts together?" Except without the magic. Or the fun.

6. So I wanted to write a quick kink meme fill that turned into a monster, and it is almost done. Whoohoo. And then I can move on to figuring out how to rewrite the one Sherlock story I am capable of writing as a space adventure AU. Remote Mars colony? Coruscant-type city-planet? Hell, maybe even the Enterprise? The options are endless!

7. I kind of really want a Sherlock Holmes (2009) OT3 vid to "Fuck You." I THINK THAT EVEN WITH THE PAIN IN HOLMES' CHEST, HE STILL WISHES WATSON THE BEST. FOR SERIOUS.

I am going to be doing [community profile] kink_bingo this year, and it is nerve-wracking and exciting, and I have plot bunnies (vague and otherwise) for four out of five of one column. :)

My card will be coming up. I want to give it its own post so that it can keep track of my progress.

---

Remix reveal was like four days ago, but I yay, I wrote The Prurient Pollen Pollutant Proposition (The Classic Mirrorverse AU) a mirroverse!Middleman fic.

And [personal profile] zulu remixed my fic. Not an entire surprise, but it was kind of hilarious since I remixed her a few years back.

---

I have a place in the Bostonish region! One bedroom by myself, but it is exciting to have a place that I could stay in for more than a year. I hate moving. Haaaaaaaate moving. I will definitely try to meet up with Bostonish fanpeople after I settle in. :)

---

I will also be out of the country for four weeks starting Sunday. Eep. Exciting and intimidating.

Still a little sick, with a stuffed nose and grumpy throat, but I have been much better lately.

Anyway, a list of cool things I have loved lately:

  • [personal profile] crossedwires has an A:tLA casting that doesn't completely suck

  • Mark Bowden wrote an article about the Conficker worm that is really terrifying and doesn't dumb things down *too* much for people who aren't very technical. I just finished a course on Computer Security, and man, it's interesting to see a real life case study of this sort of thing.

  • ThinkGeek has Ada Lovelace and Marie Curie T-shirts which are just amazing-looking. And proceeds go to The Girl Effect, which I very much approve of.

  • Homemade hot and sour soup. I drank a pot of this stuff over two days, and it was AMAZING. Learning how to make this stuff was probably one of the smarter things I have ever done.

  • Cameron/Clegg slash. Okay, doesn't entirely fall under 'cool,' but I spent three hours straight giggling like a crazed fangirl at [livejournal.com profile] lolitics_meme for being delightfully ridiculous and cracktastic (omg, the rent boy AUs). Also, I am still bitter that Clinton/Obama never caught on. I mean, I get why it didn't, but still, BITTERNESS.

  • Portal, which was free until, um, a few days ago. It's a puzzle game disguised with a first person shooter UI, and it has fun dialogue, and it is as awesome as I was led to believe. It turns out that the cake isn't a lie, after all.

Anyway, what awesome things have you guys run into lately?

1. [community profile] intro_to_cs is a comm dedicated to going through MIT's Intro CS/Programming Course. It seems to be a relaxed and friendly place to be, so if you've always wanted to learn how to program, it's a cool place to start out. Also, you don't have to deal with the bullshit macho posturing that comes with actually taking an intro CS course. And I should know.

2. Rhianna finally speaks out and is awesome about it. Man, I am so impressed, because she went through a media shitstorm with some epic victim-blaming, and she came out tough and sane and outspoken. Man, I wish I had half her courage.

3. Ada Lovelace: the Origin! Did you know that Ada Lovelace was the first programmer? And that somehow her vagina did not get in the way of this? And that she and Charles Babbage built the first computer and fought crime? Okay, that last one is not true. But the comic is awesome and you should read it.

4. [livejournal.com profile] yuletide signups are open! It's like Christmas in November! I don't have all my requests together! Or all the fandoms I want to offer! But I am still ridiculously excited about it all!

5. Fresh apples from the local farmer's market. So crisp and fresh and delicious. Yum.

6. Places that are not Maine.

7. Cucumbers.

So I've been reading waaaaaaaay too much TOS fic, which is not necessarily a bad thing, except I'm definitely one of those new skool readers who feel that the old skool fic was good for what it was, but thank god the melodrama has taken a back seat these days. I like my romances less tragic and overwrought, thankyouverymuch. Well, except for Kirk/Spock, I guess. Their romance is tragic and overwrought enough in canon that I just want more overwrought tragicness from the fic.

Things I have spent a lot of time reading that I would probably never touch with a ten foot pole in other fandoms:
1. Soul bonding - Have I told you guys lately how much I loathe soul bonding? Arguably, it's canon, but normally I can't stand blahblahblahmadeforeachothermysticalconnection bullshit. But in this fandom, I will let it go! And like, I will read it happily if it doesn't get too obnoxious.

2. Pseudo-Shakespearian dialogue - Also canon, also very annoying. The use of 'thee' and 'thy' and 'thou' makes me want to cry.

3. First-person POV - This is something I would simply backbutton immediately without any mitigating factors, mostly because first person is tricky and hard to get right, and quite frankly, I just don't like to be that close up and personal with the characters.

4. Spock crying - No, seriously. I have read it. All the way to the end.

5. Loving descriptions of Spock's alien penis - Seriously, it's like the writers are having a "how weird can we make Spock's genitals?" competition. I think the tentacle thingies win, but the apparently common double-headed cock thing is still in the running. Or even the retractable penis. Or the constant use of 'jade' as an adjective.

In addition, I spent a lot of time in Canada thinking about what sort of songs would make awesomely trashy Kirk/Spock Lord King Bad Vids. My winner so far seems to be "I Will Always Love You" which is clearly about Spock's decision to go to Gol and all the stoic manpain that came with that decision. There could even be Star Trek XI footage!

It is possible that I may have just lost my mind.

1) I keep watching Dollhouse hoping for something, I don't know what, even though it keeps letting me down. At least the quality skyrocketed from the pilot, so that's good. Also, Joss, it's not very original to have your female Asian character be (a) a hooker or (b) a nerd. JUST SAYIN'.

2) Speaking of which, [livejournal.com profile] ciderpress is holding an Asian Women Blog Carnival. I am quite excited to see what comes out of this.

3) I am trying to vid Slumdog Millionaire, and I am such a n00b at it, woe. It doesn't help that I am trying to do this on Linux, where all the video editing programs are under-featured or completely unstable. So far, I have managed to get around most of the problems by sheer force of will, but yeah, it is annoying as all hell. Also, [livejournal.com profile] queenzulu is teaching me stuff!

4) Additionally, I am sick with a cold and drinking lots and lots of liquids. This is a convenient excuse for not doing anything besides reading and vidding. This is also probably not the best strategy for this sort of thing.

1. I head back to school tomorrow, and I'm kind of ambivalent about it, which is probably bad. I don't know. I'm not cut out for this 'real life' bullshit.

2. As for the last episode of SGA, I am firmly of the belief that they fly the city right back using the wormhole drive, and John thinks it's the COOLEST THING EVER and has a big(ger) crush on Rodney's brain.

I'm not that sad about it, really. SGA is dead. Long live SGA*.

* fandom, of course.

3. I have plotted out the scenes for the heist and started writing them out, though I can already tell that this will probably take a while. Anyway, enjoy this bit of fic:

A bit of fic )

Okay, so I'm considering first cleaning up the first section of the fic and posting that as part of WIP. Obviously, this has some benefits and some drawbacks.

On one hand polishing and posting section will give me a break from the fic-writing and also some real, tangible feedback to bask in as well as actual pressure to finish it without sort of just giving up which I have been tempted to do on and off for a while.

On the other, I know for a fact that I won't be able to give my full attention to fixing up this section, because half my brain will still be in writing mode, and I know that I won't go back and fix things later because once something's posted, it tends to be 'done' in my mind as well. So it won't be as good as it could be.

I dunno. I just keep going back and forth on that.

4. In other news, all my fic has been posted to AOOO. All, um, 99 stories I'm willing to admit I've written.

5. I don't think I'll ever get over just how much I adore The Sandman. Ever.

6. New BSG is coming, and while I will attempt to enjoy it, I fear that it will repeat all of the crappiness of 4.0. Just as long as they stop pretending that dangling the final cylon in front of us is a substitute for compelling plot, then I will survive. (It seems as though there will be more Zarek, this time around. I can't wait to watch him stir shit up.)

1. So I haven't been posting much as I've been incredibly busy and stressed lately. I also haven't been catching up on House or SGA right now, which is kind of sad. :(

2. However, I have been compulsively reading up on politics, like stalking FiveThirtyEight and reading feminist/political blogs every day. Seriously. It's been stressing me out more, which is probably not good for anyone. Plz stop with the racebaiting. ppl. srsly. It's making me nauseous.

3. Also! I've been watching From The Earth To The Moon, which is just so, so heartwarming and awesome. Space! And astronauts! And I just realized that it's ten years old now, but it still feels fresh and new. Yay. I am tempted to buy the DVDs from Amazon.

4. So, I've been reading the flist, but I still want to know, what's been making you guys happy lately? Anything, really. Big or small. I, personally, learned more about regular expressions yesterday. Yay.

1. Decided that I didn't have enough work this semester and thought "Hmmm, you know what I need on top of TAing and research and normal classes? I need a graduate level algorithms or machine learning class!" WATCH ME AS I REGRET THIS DECISION ALL SEMESTER.

2. Read too many political blogs which just reminded me of how ANGRY AND BITTER AND DESPAIRING I AM ABOUT THIS ELECTION. I know people are stupid and are going to let me down this November, but I can hope, right? There's still some left?

3. Have possibly considered a sequel to Electioneering in response to (2) which would feature (a) aaaaaangst over the choice of Biden and possibly indenial!pining (b) a dramatic reconciliation at the DNC (c) cameos from Chelsea and Bill and Michelle and (d) cookies, because cookies are delicious.

4. Eaten sort of badly, mostly because the dining hall has become strangely scarier over the summer and I have no idea why. Also, because cookies are delicious and they are right there in front of me. Mmm, peanut butter chocolate chunk.

5. Watched True Blood instead of doing my reading. Whatev, it's just semiotics anyway, and True Blood seems like the sort of 'verse that demands fic, though I don't quite care about any of the characters. It's early yet, however, so we'll see.

1. So I've been exhausted by TA camp. OMG. SO MUCH WORK.

2. You know you've been getting too much spam when your first reaction to the subject line of an e-mail that says "Podficcing some of your fics?" isn't OMGCOOL, but is instead, "Huh, those spammers have some weirdly accurate random word generators." *facepalm*

3. So, I've been lazy about posting fic and such, so I'm doing that now, starting with the Doctor Who fic that has been torturing me for like months.

Title: What We've Become
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: Donna/Martha
Rating: PG
Word count: 4,090
Summary: Donna meets someone new and learns a few things about herself.
Notes: This was totally supposed to be my self-indulgent fix it for Journey's End, and it's sort of that and sort of not. Many, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] queenzulu for helping me fix things and generally being way encouraging and to [livejournal.com profile] spoggly who told me it didn't suck when I needed to hear it.

( What We've Become )

I also feel as though I should post the few bits of my [livejournal.com profile] 30_gens movieverse Bruce Wayne fics that have been sort of hidden on my harddrive for three years or so. They're pretty mediocre, but I think they're complete enough to be posted. I just need to get off my ass to do that.

3. I am also sad that no one has talked to me about the worst case runtime of quicksort in the comments of Penis Envy....
4. I judge the people who post secrets to [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets.
5. Sometimes, I have the urge to read trashy, over-the-top fanfic. SGA has been horrible to be by providing me with lots and lots of it.
6. I have not actually completed my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide reading.
7. I still want to write a Mensa-verse band AU, because I love the idea of Rod being a scruffy, laid-back drummer who's an asshole on the inside.
8. For some reason, I can't actually learn Ruby through some inability to actually read through reference materials. It's a little weird.
9. I have an incredibly boring life, and I like it that way.

Went to Boston with relatives and parents. Also stopped by Providence, which was also fun. Am now back at my apartment, and considering trying to bake some cookies, because me/cookies is totally OTP.

Also, because I feel like it,

Five things about the stuff I've written that you probably didn't know and probably don't give a shit about:

1. In my mind, Stateless is a pseudo-prequel to [livejournal.com profile] queenzulu's Lie To Me, even though the last scene with House and Wilson in Stateless and the first scene with House and Wilson in Lie To Me don't match up at all.

2. Things To Do Before You Die came together over about three days, which, considering how I write, is kind of amazing. It started with a conversation with [livejournal.com profile] savemoony on a Wednesday night, was written by hand in two notebooks over three classes on Thursday, was typed up Thursday night, and was posted Friday morning. The formatting of the novel has not changed from the version in my notebook.

3, I started writing Singapore while in Singapore, and to me, it's something that tries to do what photographs can usually only hint at. It's an attempt to capture the way a place makes you feel, not just the way it looks.

4. Minutiae was inspired by the Powers of Ten video that was shown in a couple of my science classes while growing up.

5. The One Where House Is A Zombie is an Easter story. "Nuff said.

1.

Thanks to all the people who said nice things about me on [livejournal.com profile] ignazwisdom's love meme! I swear I'll pay you guys as soon as I get the money. (Joking! Joking!) On a more serious note, it seems as though I've gotten a reputation for writing crack, which, I think, I will correct shortly, when I post the first part of my twenty part series, "The One Where Wilson Cuts Himself And Cries Like A Little Girl, While House Heals Him With His Magic Cock". I think that one's totally going to become a fandom classic.

2.

OMG, WHY AM I ON [livejournal.com profile] metafandom? I'M NOT COOL ENOUGH, I SWEAR!

3.

So this isn't really me trying to dictate how you read anything of mine, but [livejournal.com profile] bironic asked me why my Sheppard/Wilsons (all two of them!) always have unhappy endings, and I've totally managed to figure it out.

I think the two of them are just too... surface? for lack of a better word. They have all this shit that's buried and that they don't want people to see, and they're too good at being what everyone wants to see from them. And I think they'd let each other get away with too much. I think I'm going to need an example for this.

long example )

I feel that they both need House and Rodney to tell them they're full of shit every once and a while.

4.

Last, but not least, a meme!

COMPUTER SPYING MEME

1. Comment with a request to see absolutely anything on my computer. My desktop, my documents, my bookmarks, my latest works in progress... absolutely whatever you are curious about. Request it.

2. I will respond with a screenshot of the very thing you request (in another post).

Things I'm not proud of liking:

1. When people spell "canon" "cannon", because it's funny.
2. Britney Spears' "Toxic".
3. Lame romantic comedies.
4. Badfic where there's like the most cringeworthy characterization and like Wilson falls in love with House because House adopts a musical genius kid and then turns into girl, and they have sex in a badly-written fade-to-black manner. I think I'll shut up now.
5. America's Next Top Model.
6. Java.
7. Cheesy dialogue in bad movies/TV.
8. Rating gayness in terms of 'N Sync members. (Lance -> JC -> Justin -> Chris -> Joey, if you're curious)
9. Pokemon Gameboy games. Except for the random battles. And the tedious repetition of leveling up. BUT OTHER THAN THAT.
10. Magic: the Gathering.
11. Mall food. Occasionally.
12. The smell of paint.
13. Badfic AUs where everyone's like racecar drivers and stuff and people are only acting in character about half the time, when it doesn't get in the way of the omg romantic plot. Yeah.
14. Lame action movies.

In other random news, I have lots of paperwork to fill out. For like, everything. Concentration paperwork, summer internship paperwork. Lots and lots of paperwork.
