Yeah, asking for money and being asked for money is always uncomfortable! And being added to a mailing list like that, yeesh. Extra double uncomfortable.

And I get the sense that the way a lot of these support things work is mostly about supporting creators. I know it seems odd to us with our tiny fandom presences, but I think BNFs could definitely make enough to scrape by in exchange for pumping out fic. It's a model I have seen work elsewhere (in video game space), but in that case, the interaction with creators is fostered because they do things like make Youtube videos or spend a lot of time developing a presence on social media. Tumblr, especially. I've seen BNFs become something like, idk, an agony aunt? through their asks, where anonymous readers talk about their woes and the BNFs give advice back. So yeah, it doesn't match how we consume fic these days, but other people are clearly consuming fic differently!
