I'm sorry, these notes are going to be a lot longer than the vid itself, because I apparently decided to dump all my Zelda feelings here.
The Legend of Zelda fandom was my introduction into the world of fanfic. I had a friend in summer camp who told me that she wrote stories about Link and Zelda's kids, and I was instantly intrigued. People wrote their own stories of what happens after the games in the Zelda-verse? And then posted them on the internet? Reading her fic led to other archives, other authors, and as such, a lifetime of voraciously consuming fic would begin.
In some ways it was a terrible fandom to start out in. Even when the fic was well-written, it always felt like it was missing, in some way, a magic of what made the games so interesting, so compelling. It wasn't until I started writing fanfic myself (a few years after I wandered into greener fannish pastures) that I understood why. The experience of playing Zelda is nearly impossible to put into words, and trying to get at it indirectly through character and story? Forget about it. I'd never have the guts to try it myself.
So this is what this vid is, to me, an attempt to capture that feeling that Zelda inspires, in all its messy, sprawling glory. The thrill of that adventure. The things that repeat, from one iteration to another. The signs and symbols that we've come to know and love. I know there's a whole lot of games missing from this: Majora's Mask, Legend of Zelda II, nearly all of the handheld games. But this is my Zelda. There are many others, but this one is mine.
And, you know, this vid is also about grappling in my own way with my frustrations with the 'save the princess' thing that's so central to the games. I want more stories where Zelda, as a character, has more to do than get trapped, kidnapped, turned into stone, zapped out existence, etc. I don't necessarily need Zelda as a playable character, but it would be nice if there were more Zeldas that went, 'Yo, Link, there's a great evil rising and stuff, and I need you to go collect seven magical doohickeys for me. I would do it myself, but I'm too busy running a country with my Triforce of Wisdom, and I'll join you at the end for an epic boss battle at the end of it, sure."
It can feel, at times, like it's one step forward (Shiek! Tetra! Boss-fight assists!) and two steps back (welp, now that I am a pretty pink princess again, I now must do my duty to be kidnapped). But I can hope to have more Zeldas who take back their own power and who can step up and help Link out with his heroing duties.
After all, it's dangerous to go alone.
Oh, and one last thing (for real, I swear), Zac Gorman makes some super great Zelda comics. You should check them out.
